This partnership will not only allow pharmacies to improve their patients’ health outcomes by preventing adverse drug events (ADEs), butit also will lead to a strong retention of patients through the establishment of personalized medication regimens.
Having access to this medication decision support tool will enable pharmacists to educate patients on the importance of the safe use of medication and create a demand for personalized medication management.

Instead of using an outdated one-to-one drug interaction system, MedWise uses a science-backed approach to simultaneously analyze multi-drug interactions resulting in a MedWise Risk Score™ (MRS).
“We built this digital hub that…can tell the pharmacist before they dispense a medication whether it is going to be a problem, or not, based on the other drugs in a patient’s profile, or even due to a patient’s genetic makeup,” says Knowlton.
The MRS aims to reduce trial-and-error prescribing, and instead, looks at an individual’s unique medication profile to get a clear understanding of how the body will react to the drugs prescribed.
“We want pharmacists to use what they learned in school to leapfrog evidence-based medication prescribing, which is not customized for each patient, and to instead provide personalized medication,” Knowlton advocates.
A published study involving more than almost 2,000 Part D individuals found that a lower MRS correlated with fewer ADEs, emergency visits, hospitalizations, and over $1,000 in annual medical cost reduction per unit of the MRS.
Offering enhanced medication management sessions with MedWise and the MRS presents an opportunity for pharmacies to add an additional revenue stream.
TRHC has a support team of board-certified pharmacists available to help analyze a patient’s MedWise results and offer any guidance to pharmacies. Ultimately, pharmacists can choose to take TRHC’s certification course – which offers CE credits – and receive MedWise Advisor certification.
This demonstrates a benefit that a pharmacist can offer patients.
MedWise also is available in a mobile app, whereby patients can input new over-the-counter and other medications into their profile to see if any potential interactions could occur before taking them.
“This is a way patients can be tethered to their local pharmacy,” emphasizes Knowlton. “MedWise presents pharmacists with an option to provide a concierge-type service, which is an upscale practice of pharmacy available to consumers and caregivers.”
